about

This first album of mine had an unusual birth. In the 90's I was in a band called Enellen with Phill Edmundson, Paul Hammerton and Justin Monkton (from 1996-97). Songs were written by myself and (mainly) Phill. We recorded A LOT at my home studio and various others. The goal being , like all bands to get the elusive record deal. This never happened aside from an unfruitful brush with a rip off management/label. We released a short run cassette album in 1995 called "Millennia" (Now available on bandcamp for free!) The band fizzled out. Probably due to me getting married and Phill starting his other band Sibling and various other commitments.

In 2000 I started playing solo covers gigs as my main source of income. I thought it would be nice to have CD to sell to punters at gigs. So in 2001 I recorded 9 cover versions and put it on a CD to sell. To keep the copyright bill lower, I thought I would put 9 of my own on along side them. I called the album "Richard Snow" which was the name I was using on my solo gigs and made 50 copies. The following year, 2002, I ventured onto the internet for the 1st time and discovered the wonderful wild west that it was back then. Message boards, forums, MP3.com etc etc. I uploaded some of those old songs of mine to mp3.com for free listening and invited various online "friends" to check them out. I was surprised, after getting nowhere in the 90's to find praise being heaped upon them, particularly on Beach Boys and 60's forums where they were getting praise for the production and arrangements. Other musicians suggested (Jeff Cellentano in particular) that the done thing now was to self release via websites like CD Baby. So in summer 2002 I got rid of the cover versions and a made a new master of the "Richard Snow" album, adding "The Sweetest" and (as an our prayer like intro) "The Sweetest intro". I made 5 home made CDr copies with a hastily designed/awful sleeve, and sent them off to CD baby. I was surprised to find they sold almost straight away. The golden internet age when folk seemed to be keen to hear new music. So with this minor success I made some more but this time with a more pro looking sleeve. The original sleeve would continue to haunt me for years however, as when CDbaby offered me digital distribution a few years later on iTunes, amazon etc, they insisted that they must use the earliest cover that they had on file! The album continued to sell enough for me to consider it worth while having a short factory run of 100 copies made on my own "valley records" and it became a nice rewarding hobby to have the old tunes appreciated. This led to making another album "Tuesday Music" and getting airplay on small indie radio and local stations. The next step was to consider taking the tunes out live. So we ended up reforming the "old band" but called Richard Snow & The Inlaws so that we could use it as a vehicle to plug the songs of the albums. In hindsight, I wish that I had used a band name to put out this album so we could have used that, but I had no idea at the time it was going to lead to us playing live and recording more albums. Our first gig back was supporting power pop legends The Posies. In at the deep end!

In 2007 two online friends who had originally encouraged me on message boards(Jerry Boyd and Brian Battles)started their own label , SideBmusic. They licensed the album for release in the USA and they took over the promotion of this record for ten years. The SideB edition is the best looking copy of the album if you can get it, being a pro factory pressing with nice design by Brian.

Now 20 years on I present this anniversary expanded edition. Most of the songs are even older than that. amazing really.

Their are a few a copies of a new valley records re-issue CD available. The label looks like the old Valley issue, but the sleeve is Brian's superior design. Anyone who buys the CD will receive the expanded digital version for free.
